Are Smartphones Ruining Weddings?
No, but they can be a nuisance. On the 5th of November Australian Photographer Thomas Stewart made an impassioned plea on Facebook for wedding guests to put away their smartphones. The story went viral and was picked up by the national press here in England.
I was interviewed today by BBC Radio Berkshire who wanted a local Windsor wedding photographers view point on the subject – the short interview is above.
Guests at a wedding are there to enjoy themselves and part of that enjoyment is taking nice images of the special occasion on their smartphones which is just fine and as it should be … unfortunately it is a growing problem having some guests unknowingly and unintentionally getting in the way whilst using their smartphones during the ceremony. At all other times such as in the afternoon or at the reception let the guests shoot away! but leave the ceremony to the professionals, we have just one chance to capture those special moments.
At our pre-wedding meetings we suggest to our couples that perhaps a small note can be put in the order of service politely asking everyone to refrain from taking pictures during the ceremony as they have commissioned a professional wedding photographer who’s images will be available to everybody afterwards … or to ask the Vicar or Registrar to mention before the ceremony that the bridal couple wish for everybody to refrain from taking images during the ceremony.
